What is medical 3D printing and how does it work?

3D printing has been around for a while now with many 3D printers being readily available for purchase. More recently, 3D printing has been making waves in healthcare, specifically in orthopedics with Invisaid taking the lead to improve accessibility and ease.

Reconstructing CT scans in Minecraft for education

What is Invisaid?

Invisaid is preoperative orthopedic surgical planning software. It helps surgeons plan orthopedic surgeries and can be used for both medical and veterinary purposes. It also features AI-powered tools for accurate templating, segmentation and visualization, making surgical planning more efficient and precise.

Is Invisaid a medical device?

Yes, Invisaid is considered a medical device in various regions.

European Union

As per Regulation (EU) 2017/745 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 April 2017 on medical devices, Invisaid is classified as a Class I medical device.

United Kingdom

In the UK, Invisaid is registered as a Class I medical device with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

United States

In the United States, Invisaid should only be used by veterinary professionals for animal care purposes as we work towards FDA clearance.

Do I need to calibrate my images?

Technically, Invisaid isn’t a measuring device, it relies on measurements provided in medical file metadata. Alternatively, images can be manually calibrated. Calibration features support visual scaling and simulation but don’t provide validated quantitative measurements.

We strongly recommended manually calibrating images with a calibration for accurate planning. Unlike CT scans, x-ray radiographs can have variable scaling depending on factors like the distance between the X-ray source, patient and image receptor.

We’ve designed Invisaid to remind surgeons of this by prompting them to manually calibrate and verify image scaling when importing x-ray radiographs.

Is my data secure?

Yes. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We actively keep up with standards for data security and privacy.

Our customers often request that their data be stored within a certain region for their own compliance needs. We support this by allowing you to choose the region where your data is stored in your settings. By default, data is stored in the region most likely to meet your compliance needs based on your location.

You can change your data region anytime from the settings panel. When you do this, all of your existing data is migrated to the new region. This process may take some time depending on how much data you have. Remember, changing regions will not affect performance as Invisaid is optimized for global access.

Does it work with PACS?

Yep, Invisaid supports connections with PACS systems over both DIMSE and DICOMweb™.

DIMSE

A DIMSE connection only works if you are on the same network as your PACS server. To connect via DIMSE, you’ll need the AE title, IP address and port number of your PACS server. Some of our customers also utilize TLS encryption for additional security, we do support this as well and highly recommend it.

DICOMweb™

To connect via DICOMweb™, you’ll need the base URL of your PACS server along with any necessary authentication details.

Once you have the required information, you can set up the connection in the PACS panel. As a workspace administrator, you can create and share PACS connections with users in your workspace.

Can I import data from other systems?

Of course. Inviaid supports various import sources including local file uploads and cloud storage providers. Some of our customers prefer phased migrations whereas others opt for a single bulk import. We support both approaches. All of the import sources listed below can be used for one-off imports or as ongoing connections. You can also set up multiple import sources if needed.

Amazon Web Services

Importing from Amazon S3 is straightforward. You’ll need the bucket name, region and an access key ID alongside the associated secret access key to set up the connection. The credentials you provide should have the correct permissions policies attached. We recommend AmazonS3FullAccess for full functionality. Once connected, you can select specific folders or objects within the bucket to import. You can also set up filters to only import certain types of files if needed.

TraumaCAD

To connect with Quentry, you’ll need your Brainlab ID and password. Remember, a Brainlab ID isn’t the same as your email address. If you’ve forgotten your Brainlab ID, you can recover it by attempting to reset your password. Once you do this, you’ll get a password reset email that mentions your Brainlab ID. Once connected, you can set up a bulk import of all your Quentry data. Alternatively, you can choose to import specific data as needed.

PeekMed®

PeekMed® can store data locally on your device. To import data from PeekMed® into Invisaid, you need to export your PeekMed cases as CSV files. By default, the exported files are named using the format below.

PeekMed_<TypeOfPlanning>_<PatientName>_<PatientID>_<AccessionNumber>_<Age>_<DateofBirth>_<DD-MM-YYYY-HH-MM>.csv

We recommended sticking with default file names but this isn’t strictly necessary. Once you have your CSV files, simply drag and drop them into Invisaid to import your cases.

If the the system you’re migrating from isn’t listed here, get in touch. We’re able to build and release new migration tools fairly quickly. Alternatively, you can use our SDKs to build your own.
